ARCHETYPE EDITING’s 150 word Spooky Microfiction Challenge Entry

Prompt: a confined space.

“Rumors say this house is haunted,” Steven taunted from the other side of the kitchen cabinet door. “Let’s find out.”

Katie realized she was tricked, he lied that there was a kitten trapped in the bottom kitchen cabinet. There was no kitten, even though she heard it mewling.

Now she was trying to push with all her might against the cabinet door her big brother kept shut with his larger body, preventing escape.

Breathless, she finally gave up.

In the darkness of the cramped cabinet, a scratching noise accompanied by a low threatening growl made a chill race up her spine.

Steven snickered when Katie finally gave up.

Hearing Katie’s sudden screams of terror fade away as if going down a long tunnel finally caused Steven to open the cabinet door to find her gone. Red glowing eyes stared back from the darkness that extended into nothingness.
